Lost Your Password? Blood carries the story of our ancestry. It is essential, and it is everywhere! Both Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda share a recognition that blood operates within the larger and deeper context of our being.
Both these ancient systems know that blood is vital and symbolic. It is both physical and archetypical, and carries meaning beyond its movement through capillaries, veins, and arteries. In thinking about the circulatory system and the blood that enlivens it, it is vital to understand this bodily system not just for its individual components and physical function, but for its significance on a primal, symbolic level.
In my own yoga and Ayurveda practices, I have personally become more motivated to better understand the pivotal role of blood and circulation. I am fascinated by how an imbalance in blood and circulation can be intimately linked to so many other health imbalances. By properly moving and nourishing the blood, one can potentially ameliorate and prevent so many problems. One person I knew I wanted to interview on this subject is Dr.
Morris has decades of clinical and academic experience in Chinese medicine. I was delighted that Dr. Morris was willing to offer a bit of his time to speak on the subject of nourishing the blood.
This is a synopsis of our conversation. The answers given are paraphrased from our conversation. A: There are two common types of blood deficiency: low circulatory volume and low iron, as in cases of anemia. Low blood volume and deficient iron may or may not exist together. A: There are a host of ramifications when the blood is low. One might see a sign or symptom, such as fainting, dizziness, and a weak, thin pulse. Some signs on the tongue are a pale tongue, pale lower eyelids, shortness of breath, and palpitations a sensation of the heart beating in the chest or head.
Deficient blood may also affect the intestinal tract, causing dry stools. One may also experience aches and malaise due to blood not moving effectively through the joints. Weak self-esteem, nervousness, anxiety, and insomnia may also be symptomatic of blood deficiency.

There needs to be a confluence of signs based on what the practitioner sees and the client experiences to determine blood deficiency. A: There may be an inability to absorb nutrients, a loss of blood, or an inability to produce healthy blood cells. Genetic patterning, constitutional weakness, and weakness of organs and tissues can also cause blood deficiency. Our sources of nourishment are air, food, and our innate energetic capacity.
If there is a compromise to any of these, then the vitality of the blood may be compromised. Digestion is also important. If someone is malnourished or not absorbing food properly, this will affect the state of the blood. This formula moves the blood in order to create new blood. The herb dong quai Angelica sinensis is also classic for moving and nourishing the blood.
If there is inadequate blood supply due to stress and constriction, dong quai would be indicated. For thousands of years, people have been using cupping as an alternative therapy method for alleviating stress, body aches, and more. Up to this day, a lot of Olympic and professional athletes still count on the ancient technique to recover and recuperate.
The best thing about the technique is that it gives you instant pleasant relief right after the session. Read on if you want to know why these marks occur and what they mean?
In massage and acupuncture, the therapist applies pressure on the skin to reach the superficial layer of muscles in the body.Amplifi meshpoint review
On the other hand, cupping is an alternate therapy method that involves applying suction on different parts of the body. The suction is applied using special cups that are designed for that purpose, which is where the method got its name. The healer sanitizes the skin, then places a candle over a specific part of the body and then puts these glass jars over the candle.
This creates a negative pressure that draws the skin up into the cups, creating a pleasant and relaxing sensation.Rowdy bangalore
Cupping is composed of different methods with various techniques. For example, some of them are just left for about 5 to 10 minutes, while other therapists might start gliding the cups over different parts of the body.
Cupping, in general, is regarded as a relatively safe practice.
Almost all studies conducted on that aspect proved that cupping is a beneficial alternative therapy technique. Despite all the good merits of cupping, it still has some flaws. Just like any therapeutic technique, cupping has some side effects that show after the session is finished.Marnie friendship stardew valley
The most common side effect of cupping therapy is the presence of cupping marks and the discoloration of the skin. The bruising of the skin is regarded as a part of the therapy session in many cases.
There are two common explanations for the marks that are left behind after the cupping therapy. The more obvious one lies in the blood circulation. When the negative pressure is applied in the cups, and the skin is drawn up, a lot of the tiny blood capillaries in the superficial layer of muscles and skin are broken. This drives the body to treat the area as a bruise and start a bruise healing process.
This process causes the discoloration of the skin by producing chemicals known as inflammatory mediators and by forming tiny blot clots under the skin. The other reason for cupping to leave marks is a bit tricker. When suction occurs, the gap between the skin layers increases.
This extra space allows the tissues to collect more fluids, toxins, and dead cellular debris under the top layer of the skin. As the lymphatic system washes this debris away, the skin returns to its original color. In fact, even ancient healers considered these bruises an indication of the success of the therapy session.
The reason behind that is that they believed that these dark marks represent the release of the toxins from the body, which is close to the debris theory.Only a Glass of This Juice will Remove Clogged Arteries And Control Blood Pressure
They also believed that the darker these marks are, the more stagnation and toxin-filled the blood was. There are other side effects that you can experience after cupping therapy. These are mainly minor dizziness and headaches.
There are also some side effects that occur due to practicing cupping therapy with an experienced therapist. These include pain and discomfort. One of the most common outcomes of cupping therapy should lie within the range of pinkish colors. The Liver, Heart and Spleen organ systems are the most relevant systems related to Blood, but all of the organ systems according to Chinese medicine play a role in Blood production and distribution.
Blood is a Yin substance that must constantly circulate in order for fresh, new, nourishing Blood to be produced on a regular basis. Signs of Blood Deficiency include dry skin, dizzinesswithered skin, lusterless complexion, pale lips, a weak pulse, insomniatight muscles, inflexible jointsand thinning brittle hair. Blood Deficiency is typically due to a chronic nutritional deficiencies. In addition to the general Blood Deficient symptoms, Heart Blood Deficiency may be marked with palpitationsdream disturbed sleepeasy fright, lack of mental focus, and poor memory.
Consider Blood Mansion formula. Prolonged Heart Blood Deficiency and Qi Stagnation can result in serious, sometimes fatal disease patterns. Symptoms may include stabbing pain over heart, left arm pain, sensation of suffocation, and shortness of breath. In addition to the general Blood Deficient symptoms, Liver Blood Deficient patterns might include ridged, brittle nails; dry eyeseye floatersblurred vision, or night blindness; irregular or scanty menstrual flow; irritability and frustration.
Liver Blood Stagnation will often present with one or more of the following indications: sharp pain on sides and around ribs; headaches with fixed stabbing pain ; painful, irregular periods with purple or brown blood; abdominal masses; enlarged Liver or Spleen. The Liver controls the menstrual Blood; stagnation of the Lower Jiao would be indicated with menstrual Blood that had clots, or is dark in color brown-purple. Heavy menstrual bleeding and prolonged menstrual cycles can also be indications of Blood Stagnation.
Indications: Severe, stabbing abdominal pain ; stomach pain that is aggravated with pressure or heat; severe abdominal pain after eating. This condition will require professional medical attention, and you will want to consult a local licensed acupuncturist.
The Spleen is partially responsible for containing the Blood in the vessels. Consider Restore the Middle Way formula. Consider Blood Mansion formula together with Enlightened Emperor formula. Heat in the Blood can develops due to virulent pathogens, infectionsprolonged exposure to heat, chemotherapy or radiation, Liver-Fire, or prolonged Yin Deficiency.
This type of bleeding would not be due to trauma; rather would include symptoms such as coughing up blood during a flunose bleeds, vomiting blood, or blood in the stool or urine.
Most of these conditions would require emergency care or guidance from a local health care professional. In a healthy body, white blood cells only survive a few weeks to months.
Red blood cells survive about four months; they are then removed from the blood. Because these cells are central in the delivery of nutrients and the proper function of our immune response, it is vital to provide the body with the proper nourishment to reproduce blood cells. One way acupuncturists relieve Blood Stagnation is through Fire Cupping. Much is lost in translation in Chinese medicine ; this is because westerners generally do not have the cultural knowledge of a foreign land or language understandably.
The term Blood Stasis was taken from the term xue yu which is more accurately translated as "Blood Silt Disease". Silt is defined as fine sand, clay, or other sediment carried by running water and deposited as sediment, especially in a channel or river. You can imagine a patients' confusion when the acupuncturist explains that they have Blood Silt; they may ask how silt got into the Blood.
Dietary Suggestions for Blood Stagnation
Instead, it is meant to portray Blood that is less than optimal and therefore sluggish or impeded. When a blood vessel a vein or an artery is injured, the body uses platelets thrombocytes and fibrin to form a blood clot to prevent blood loss. Even when a blood vessel is not injured, blood clots may form in the body under certain conditions. A clot, or a piece of the clot, that breaks free and begins to travel around the body is known as an embolus. Thrombosis may occur in veins venous thrombosis or in arteries arterial thrombosis.
Venous thrombosis leads to congestion of the affected part of the body, while arterial thrombosis and rarely severe venous thrombosis affects the blood supply and leads to damage of the tissue supplied by that artery ischemia and necrosis. A piece of either an arterial or a venous thrombus can break off as an embolus which can travel through the circulation and lodge somewhere else as an embolism. This type of embolism is known as a thromboembolism.
Complications can arise when a venous thromboembolism commonly called a VTE lodges in the lung as a pulmonary embolism. An arterial embolus may travel further down the affected blood vessel where it can lodge as an embolism. Thrombosis is generally defined by the type of blood vessel affected arterial or venous thrombosis and the precise location of the blood vessel or the organ supplied by it.
Deep vein thrombosis DVT is the formation of a blood clot within a deep vein. It most commonly affects leg veins, such as the femoral vein. Three factors are important in the formation of a blood clot within a deep vein—these are the rate of blood flow, the thickness of the blood and qualities of the vessel wall. Classical signs of DVT include swellingpain and redness of the affected area. The condition usually comes to light after vigorous exercise and usually presents in younger, otherwise healthy people.
Men are affected more than women. Budd-Chiari syndrome is the blockage of a hepatic vein or of the hepatic part of the inferior vena cava. This form of thrombosis presents with abdominal painascites and enlarged liver. Treatment varies between therapy and surgical intervention by the use of shunts. Portal vein thrombosis affects the hepatic portal veinwhich can lead to portal hypertension and reduction of the blood supply to the liver.
Renal vein thrombosis is the obstruction of the renal vein by a thrombus. This tends to lead to reduced drainage from the kidney. Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis CVST is a rare form of stroke which results from the blockage of the dural venous sinuses by a thrombus. Symptoms may include headacheabnormal vision, any of the symptoms of stroke such as weakness of the face and limbs on one side of the body and seizures.
The majority of persons affected make a full recovery. The mortality rate is 4. Jugular vein thrombosis is a condition that may occur due to infection, intravenous drug use or malignancy. Jugular vein thrombosis can have a varying list of complications, including: systemic sepsispulmonary embolismand papilledema. Though characterized by a sharp pain at the site of the vein, it can prove difficult to diagnose, because it can occur at random.
Cavernous sinus thrombosis is a specialised form of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis, where there is thrombosis of the cavernous sinus of the basal skull dura, due to the retrograde spread of infection and endothelial damage from the danger triangle of the face. The facial veins in this area anastomose with the superior and inferior ophthalmic veins of the orbit, which drain directly posteriorly into the cavernous sinus through the superior orbital fissure.
Staphyloccoal or Streptococcal infections of the face, for example nasal or upper lip pustules may thus spread directly into the cavernous sinus, causing stroke-like symptoms of double visionsquintas well as spread of infection to cause meningitis. Arterial thrombosis is the formation of a thrombus within an artery.Spectral vs jeffsy
In most cases, arterial thrombosis follows rupture of atheroma a fat-rich deposit in the blood vessel walland is therefore referred to as atherothrombosis. Arterial embolism occurs when clots then migrate downstream, and can affect any organ. The work of the whole organism depends on the quality of the vascular heart wall, because the heart is the main organ.
Riboxin — activates the heart, enhances protein synthesis, improves contractility. Asparkam normalizes heart rate. Tincture of hawthorn normalizes the nervous system, relieves anxiety and irritability. One of the simplest and most effective traditional medicine for poor circulation is the variable use of hot and cold water for the lower extremities. Immersion of the lower extremities in hot water about 40 degrees will stimulate the expansion of blood vessels near the surface of the skin, which causes blood to flow to the skin, and regulates body temperature.
After the lower extremities were exposed to hot water, immersion of the legs in cold water from zero to 10 degrees will cause the blood vessels to narrow, this will prevent the outflow of blood from the skin and will maintain an appropriate body temperature. Repeating this procedure several times at home, you can normalize the blood supply to the legs, increase skin tone and accelerate the delivery of oxygen to body tissues.
According to the American Association of Massage Therapy, massage can increase blood and lymph circulation in the human body. But the effects of massage go beyond merely improving blood flow; massage can also cause changes in the blood. Blood oxygen capacity may increase from 10 to 15 percent after massage. Acupuncture masters, like massage therapists, can improve the health status of a person suffering from poor blood circulation in the legs.
What to do in case of this problem, the acupuncture master will say only after a thorough examination of the patient. After all, poor blood circulation in the legs can be caused by several different conditions.
And each condition requires an injection of certain points, although there are several common points. Some of these common points relate to the colon, liver, spleen, and bladder.
After an acupuncture session, itching, burning and temporary numbness can be felt in the place where the needle was. Lack of physical activity is one of the main causes of poor blood circulation in the legs. Engaging in physical activity, especially aerobic activities such as brisk walking, cycling and swimming, improves blood circulation in the legs and other parts of the body. According to a study, hypertensive patients who performed aerobic exercise showed a significant increase in capillary density.
Capillaries are tiny blood vessels through which oxygen is transferred to body tissue. They optimize the blood circulation of a person, creating new channels for blood flow and oxygen delivery.
Detonic — a unique medicine that helps fight hypertension at all stages of its development. The complex effect of plant components of the drug Detonic on the walls of blood vessels and the autonomic nervous system contribute to a rapid decrease in blood pressure. In addition, this drug prevents the development of atherosclerosis, thanks to the unique components that are involved in the synthesis of lecithin, an amino acid that regulates cholesterol metabolism and prevents the formation of atherosclerotic plaques.
Detonic not addictive and withdrawal syndrome, since all components of the product are natural. A study published in the American Journal of Cardiology found that when smokers were given vitamin C, their blood circulation increased.
Vitamin C is responsible for the production and repair of blood vessels, which is important for blood circulation. Vitamin C is found in most fruits and vegetables. Therefore, you need to eat more ripe citrus fruits, kiwi, mango, berries and melons, and not neglect green vegetables. Increased intake of vitamin E also improves blood circulation because it dilates blood vessels and inhibits blood clotting.
Vegetable oils and green leafy vegetables are the main sources of vitamin E, in addition to almonds, peanuts, hazelnuts and sunflower seeds. Inresearchers found that administering omega-3 fatty acids to rats in the form of fish oil increased blood flow to the liver. What is Blood stagnation? Traditional Chinese medicine defines Blood Stagnation as a syndrome where blood circulation is impaired.
This can occur with physical traumatic injuries and poor dietary or lifestyle choices which impair blood flow like high cholesterol diets and smoking. Syndromes associated with Blood Stagnation or Blood Stasis include uterine fibroids, bruises, bone fractures, joint pain, cardiac disease and migraines. The following is a suggested guideline of foods to limit or avoid because they may reduce blood circulation:. Add the following foods to your diet for their blood moving or anti-inflammatory qualities:.
Try to eat meals at consistent times of the day. If you know your day will be filled with activities, pack your meals the night before in easy to travel containers.

Healthy Blood flow is vital to nourishing all the cells in your body, which include egg and sperm cells.
Nourishing the Blood: TCM and Ayurvedic Perspectives
If blood flow reduces it may cause male and female fertility issues that typically present with either an obstruction in flow of blood or fluids, or the development of a growth or mass.
In women this can result in a variety of circulatory issues affecting the uterus, ovaries, or fallopian tubes. In men it can affect the testicles and cause issues such as a varicocele and sperm abnormalities.
When healthy your blood circulates to all of your cells including sperm and eggs and will deliver nutrients for the cells to use. The blood also removes waste from the cells and delivers it to the organs and systems responsible for elimination.
If your blood flow decreases then Blood Stagnation develops. This negatively affects the delivery of nutrients to the cells, and the removal of waste from the cells. Over time waste and blood stagnates and collects to form masses, which damage blood vessels causing further progression of the Blood Stagnation pattern along with an accumulation of fluids and blood in the local area.
This causes the physical fertility issues for men and women as listed above. If Blood Stagnation exists for an extended time then it typically leads to more progressed versions of the issues listed above, as well as creating one or more of the following patterns of health imbalance too: DampnessQi Stagnation and Blood Deficiency. Important note: Blood stagnation is a complex imbalance and generally needs treating with herbal medicine.
Most foods are not strong enough to treat this pattern alone, but the ones listed above will certainly help a little.
